The two creators of the HBO show Game of Thrones David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have been brought into the Star Wars family to create a new stand alone Star Wars series apart from the original Skywalker saga and separate from Rian Johnson’s previously slated independent trilogy. Benioff and Weiss adapted the hit book series written by George R. R. Martin for HBO and the show is preparing its final season to premiere in 2019. After the conclusion of game of Thrones, the pair will begin working on their Star Wars series. No details have been announced on a potential timeline for the films or even what part/timeframe the films will take place within the Star Wars universe. There are infinite possibilities of new stories to tell within the Star Wars universe from Old Republic, Clone Wars, the future of the Jedi or even the origin of the Sith.

In a statement on the Star Wars website, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy shared: David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.

In response Benioff and Weiss stated: In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.

There are mixed reactions to the news regarding the new trilogy. Some fans, many who were vocal against the direction of latest Star Wars film, The Last Jedi, oppose the idea of moving away from the Skywalker story. Others on Twitter seemed concerned about the potential for over saturation with the Star Wars universe if two series are being developed simultaneously. Others were also concerned about the lack of diversity of Star Wars helmsmen- J.J Abrams, Ron Howard, Gareth Edwards, Rian Johnson, as well as Benioff and Weiss have all been chosen by Disney/Lucasfilm.

Lucasfilm has also had a rough road with directors in the past- Ron Howard was brought in to rescue the standalone Solo after creative differences caused a split between Kennedy and original directors Lord and Miller. Director Colin Trevorrow was released from the ninth original film installment and replaced by safe bet J J Abrams who directed number seven- The Force Awakens. Some on Twitter joked that they couldn’t wait to see who Kennedy will choose to replace Benioff and Weiss.
