SpaceX made history in the successful launch of the Falcon Heavy. The design of the Falcon Heavy is intended for manned interplanetary travel- with Mars being the first mission for SpaceX. The Falcon Heavy’s successful launch is a historic step forward in sending a man to Mars.

Falcon Heavy consists of three Falcon 9 cores- with the middle rocket strengthened to sustain a heavier payload. The two side Falcon 9 boosters returned to their landing pads successfully. The third main core of Falcon Heavy successfully began its descent though due to camera failure on the landing pad has not been confirmed for successful return.

The payload for the test flight did not contain humans but instead contained SpaceX founder Elon Musk’s red Tesla Roadster with a SpaceX astronaut suit in the front seat- fondly dubbed Spaceman in homage to David Bowie. Bowie’s song Life on Mars is playing from the Tesla- despite the absence of sound in space- and will continue to play as the Tesla begins its billion year journey around the orbit of Mars. The names of the over 6,000 employees from SpaceX are inscribed on the payload and a disk of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series was also included.

The launch was a beautiful testament to the ingenuity and resilience of humanity and a major step in the ultimate mission of SpaceX- manned interplanetary travel.
